It reads as a sad testimony

to their existence

but rings true

on every level

of the subconscious

which directs the choices

they will inevitably make

Those who truly love them

usually have no idea

that they have grown incapable

of returning any emotion

which is not bordered with ice

and indifference

the main objective always

being to get their way

with little or no question

They will smile of course

but with prompting or the

promise of some desired

trinket

yet, they are confused by

real smiles

and often make mental notes

as how to avoid chance

encounters

with happiness

because the work it entails

includes the possibility of

not coming away

with something tangible

something that they can

touch, feel or manipulate

because intangibles

remind them too much

of ghosts

and possibilities

They are smart

yet not wise

never imagining that

the universe comes with a memory

and love squandered and muddied

dirties not love

but the soul

laughing at its expense
